Sample the magic and beauty of Central American rainforests, ruins, volcanoes and colonial towns as well as an epic journey through the mighty Panama Canal. The majority of Panama Canal voyages are re-positioning cruises, as the great ships make their way between their Summer and Winter ports, such as Alaska and Florida, or vice versa. However, shorter Panama Canal cruises are also available, usually round-trip from Florida, on the Caribbean side, although these will not complete the historic crossing.

The Panama Canal is an engineering feat that, quite simply, has to be seen to be believed. Talk of building a canal began way back in the 16th century and various attempts were made to start the project off throughout the 1800s. Technical and political difficulties kept hampering these efforts, however, and it wasn’t until 1914 that the construction was completed, by the USA, at a gargantuan cost of $352 million. The canal stretches some 49 miles between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans and today it employs around nine thousand people, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Historians are normally on hand to tell the stories and explain the mechanical workings, as your ship climbs up and down the many locks. A remarkable experience!
